How the Trust Score works
We score every roofing company on the same 14 checks. Each check is rated from 0 to 100 and weighted by how much it matters to a homeowner. The weights add up to 100, so the Trust Score is a weighted average.
| Check | What we look at | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Roofing specialization | Roofing is the core business, with dedicated pages for each type of work offered. | 10 |
| Service area coverage | Cities and neighbourhoods served are clearly listed and match the company’s real locations. | 5 |
| Licensing and registration | Municipal business licence and any provincial contractor licence required where the company works. | 10 |
| Insurance and workers’ compensation | Liability insurance and active coverage with the provincial workers’ compensation board. | 10 |
| Manufacturer certifications | Current certifications from shingle, metal or membrane manufacturers. | 6 |
| Verified years in business | Operating history confirmed by registry records or other independent sources. | 6 |
| Average review rating | Weighted average across Google, HomeStars, BBB and other relevant platforms. | 12 |
| Review volume | Enough reviews for the rating to be meaningful. | 6 |
| Review recency | Share of reviews written in the last 12 months. | 5 |
| Cross-platform consistency | The reputation holds up across platforms, not only on one. | 5 |
| Complaint handling | How the company responds to negative reviews and resolves disputes. | 5 |
| Written warranty | A workmanship warranty in writing, with a stated term. | 8 |
| Project portfolio | Photos and descriptions of real, recent projects. | 8 |
| Information consistency | Name, address and phone match across the website and directory listings. | 4 |
Provisional and verified scores
While we are building the ranking, many scores are marked Provisional. A provisional score uses only what a company publishes on its own website. We have not yet checked licences, insurance, warranty documents or review platforms.
- Evidence on the website raises a check above 50. Evidence of a problem lowers it below 50.
- Information that is not published is marked Not assessed and scored a neutral 50. Missing information is neither rewarded nor punished.
- A claim without proof, such as a licence with no number or insurance with no certificate, earns only a small credit.
- Review ratings are used only once we have collected them from the review platform itself, not from a figure a company shows on its own site.
A score becomes Verified after we check the documents and platforms. Companies can send documents to speed this up.
Reliable partner: featured placements
The Company of the Month block is a featured top-of-category placement. A company that holds one is a paying partner of Roofing Score and is marked Reliable partner. The placement is available for one city or for all of Canada, and a company takes it by agreement with us.
- It is a paid placement. The label describes the partnership. It is not a rating and not a recommendation by Roofing Score.
- It sits outside the numbered ranking, above the list.
- Payment never changes a company’s Trust Score, its scores on any check, or its numbered rank. The company is scored in the ranking like every other company.
Updates and corrections
Scores are reviewed every quarter. A company can send documents, such as a licence, insurance certificate or warranty terms, to correct its profile. We only change a score when the new information can be verified.
